چکیده

A catalogue is presented with variable (RR Lyrae, semiregular and Mira) stars located inside field #3 of the Palomar-Groningen Survey at the outer edge of the Sagittar-ius dwarf galaxy. One of the semiregular variables is a carbon star, comparable with those found by Azzopardi et al. (1991). Serendipity provides the suggestion, that their carbon stars might not be located inside, but behind the bulge in the Sagit-tarius dwarf galaxy.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Field # 3 of the Palomar - Groningen survey ?

Near-infrared photometry (JHKL M) was obtained for 78 semiregular variables (SRVs) in field #3 of the Palomar-Groningen survey (PG3, l = 0 • , b = −10 •). Together with a sample of Miras in this field a comparison is made with a sample of field SRVs and Miras. The PG3 SRVs form a sequence (period – luminosity & period – colour) with the PG3 Miras, in which the SRVs are the short period extensio...

A Large-Area Search for Low Mass Objects in Upper Scorpius I: The Photometric Campaign and New Brown Dwarfs

We present a wide-field photometric survey covering ∼200 deg toward the Upper Scorpius OB association. Data taken in the R and I bands with the Quest2 camera on the Palomar 48-inch telescope were combined with the 2MASS JHKS survey and used to select candidate pre-main sequence stars. Followup spectroscopy with the Palomar 200-inch telescope of 62 candidate late-type members identified 43 stars...

The Cornell High-order Adaptive Optics Survey for Brown Dwarfs in Stellar Systems–I: Observations, Data Reduction, and Detection Analyses

In this first of a two-paper sequence, we report techniques and results of the Cornell High-order Adaptive Optics Survey for brown dwarf companions (CHAOS). At the time of this writing, this study represents the most sensitive published population survey of brown dwarf companions to main sequence stars, for separation akin to our own outer solar system. The survey, conducted using the Palomar 2...

Horizontal - Branch Models and the Second - Parameter Effect . Iv

We present a detailed analysis of the “second-parameter pair” of globular clusters M3 (NGC 5272) and Palomar 3. Our main results can be summarized as follows: i) The horizontal-branch (HB) morphology of M3 is significantly bluer in its inner regions (observed with the Hubble Space Telescope) than in the cluster outskirts (observed from the ground), i.e., M3 has an internal second parameter. Mos...
